How to Start a Food Truck in South Carolina

Getting Your "A" in the Window

As of July 2024 the South Carolina Department of Agriculture has taken over the responsibilities of food service inspections from DHEC. You can apply for your food service license here.


Before applying, and before you go buying your truck or trailer ensure it is up to code here.


At least one person present while your mobile unit is open must be Servsafe certified. We recommend having this prior to buying your food truck or trailer.


Tax Rates & Requirements

Sate sales tax: 6%


County sales tax permitted: yes

Average county sales tax is 1.5%


Peddlers fees permitted: yes


South Carolina does permit peddlers fees, and you must have one for every city you do business in as a mobile unit.



Insurance Requirements

While insurance requirements vary from city to city most require at least $1-2 million in general liability insurance.

Pro Tip: Do not use the same insurance provider for your business as you do your personal affairs, it can messy the waters if you ever want to switch providers or look for better rates.


DMV Registration Requirements

Vehicle registration is needed for trucks, the state has no requirements for trailers.

Incorporating Your Food Truck in South Carolina

You can file for incorporation through the South Carolina Secretary of State here.


Fire Safety Requirements

South Carolina requires all mobile units to have a fire extinguisher onboard and anyone that has a cooking surface ie flattop, fryer etc. must have an inspection done by the local fire marshal.
